A wealth of household cleaning tips

Furniture Cleaning

Its important to keep your furniture clean and tidy.  If a piece of furniture is kept clean it will continue to look good and will last longer.  If neglected a piece of furniture will soon look shabby and older than its years.

Cleaning Painted Furniture

On a weekly basis you should dust the painted furniture with a damp cloth or duster and non silicon polish.

If you need to remove stains from painted furniture, you can use a mild solution of washing up liquid and warm water.  Remember you can use an old toothbrush to gently clean any intricate bits.

Cleaning Metal Furniture

On a weekly basis give your metal furniture a gentle wipe with a damp cloth.  Its important to make sure you dry the metal afterwards, or this could lead to rust developing.

If you do have any rust spots on metal furniture, you can remove them by gently rubbing with wire wool.

Stubborn stains and marks can removed using a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water.

Cleaning Wooden Furniture

On a weekly basis, wipe your wooden furniture with a soft microfibre cloth.  You can use a small soft paintbrush and the smaller vacuum attachments to extract dust from the more intricate areas.

If you want to use a Wax Polish on your wooden furniture, you should ensure that you wipe it down first.  If you don’t do this you will just be trapping the dirt under the polish.  Apply the polish gently, with a soft cloth, and then buff up to leave a smart shiny finish.  You should only do this a couple of times per year, and always make sure you use the same polish.

If you find that you have small scratches on your wooden furniture, these can be disguised with a matching wax crayon or matching shoe polish.

Watermarks can be removed using a cream metal polish, you should however test the polish on an inconspicuous area first.

If you have grease marks on your unsealed wood, a great tip is to sprinkle talcum powder over the mark and then cover with a piece of kitchen roll and press with a warm iron.
